An American inventor based in the UK has won an international design competition. Michael Chen, 28, won a £6,000 prize for his Reactiv cycle jacket, which changes colour as the cyclist brakes. The inspiration for the jacket came from wanting to feel safer when cycling the streets of London. Chen said: “I cycled round London in the dark wearing my first prototype. It was a £10 waterproof jacket with LEDs stuck on by gaffer tape.” He continued: “For the first time, I noticed that cars passed me more slowly, gave me more room, and that the drivers and passengers were even making eye contact.”
How it works: The jacket uses an accelerometer to sense movement, changing the colour of LEDs on the back from green when accelerating, then to red when braking. A tilt switch in the jacket also makes LEDs in the arm flash amber when the wearer lifts their arm to indicate a turn.

Como me afeta: Diretamente, pois sendo um dos muitos londrinos que possuem uma magrela e que usam este tipo de transporte diariamente para ir ao trabalho essa eh uma otima noticia. Em Londres, diariamente 2 por cento das jornadas ao trabalho sao feitas de bicicleta, isso representa 450.000 pessoas todos os dias, entretanto ainda muito atras de outras grandes cidades europeias como Berlim (5 por cento), Munique(12 por cento), Copenhagem (20 por cento) e Amsterdam (28 por cento). O problema de Londres nao sao os motoristas, em sua maioria educados, nem a velocidade, pois a cidade esta constantemente engarrafada, aqui no pais da Rainha o problema sao as ruas inacreditavelmente estreitas, por mais cuidadoso que o motorista (tanto dos carros quanto o da bicicleta) sejam, qualquer falta de atencao ou de sinalizacao pode causar um grande acidente. Por isso acredito que esta nova jaqueta vem bem a calhar, ainda mais com esse
“pisca pisca” acoplado, melhor impossivel. Quando chegar ao mercado nao hesitarei e serei um dos primeiros compradores.
